Our summer internship program has grown each year and in 2018 has the highest participation in history across all regions! The internship programs help ensure a diverse and motivated workforce is ready to step into significant roles while providing valuable job experience and mentoring opportunities for high school students.
“Our internship programs help us build our future workforce,” said Brooke Noah, diversity and inclusion coordinator, and internship programs manager. “With over 40 percent of our workforce eligible to retire within ten years, it’s more important than ever that we build a robust pipeline of qualified and diverse talent to help keep the company moving forward.”
In Minnesota, we are providing on-the-job training for 28 Step-UP Achieve interns in Minneapolis and 10 Right Track interns in St. Paul. Three of the Step-UP interns are also alumni of the Legacy I-3 program, which provides high schoolers opportunities to learn about energy industry careers.
We have a total of 19 interns in Colorado this year, seven coming to us through the Denver Public Schools CareerLaunch program. CareerLaunch allows students to explore potential STEM career paths, giving real-world applications to their coursework.
For the first time this year, we are also sponsoring internship programs in Amarillo, Texas, building on our relationship with the Amarillo Area Center for Advanced Learning (AACAL). In previous years, Xcel Energy volunteers have participated in mock interviews with AACAL participants, helping them practice dialogue skills. This year, we used the mock interviews to hire three interns from the program!
To further our commitment to our interns, we’ve created the Xcel Energy Ambassadors group. Any student who has been in any of the internship programs at Xcel Energy that is interested in a career in energy can join and instantly be connected to a mentor for guidance and support in their job search. All steps to help ensure a diverse and motivated workforce is ready to step into prominent roles.
