Trick 2: Make it stop “goblin” extra electricity.
Not quite ready to make it disappear for good? Make sure it’s not “goblin” more energy than it needs to. Here are a few suggestions from ENERGY STAR®.
Cool it—to the right degree. Recommended temperatures are 35°F to 38°F for the fridge’s fresh food compartment and 0°F for separate freezers for long-term storage.
Keep food under cover. Cover liquids and wrap foods stored in the refrigerator. Uncovered foods release moisture and make the compressor work harder.
Frost isn’t your friend. Regularly defrost manual-defrost freezers and refrigerators; frost buildup decreases the energy efficiency of the unit. Don’t allow frost to build up more than one-quarter of an inch.
