It was an honor to receive two EPA Climate Leadership Awards last night. Xcel Energy was recognized for excellence in greenhouse gas management and for our innovative Clean Energy Partnership with the City of Minneapolis and CenterPoint Energy.
Xcel Energy’s carbon reduction efforts are part of a broader clean energy strategy that we’ve pursued for more than a decade. By the end of 2014, we had reduced our carbon dioxide emissions by 20 percent compared to 2005 levels – six years ahead of schedule. We’re on track to continue that reduction trend across our systems – and most importantly, we are able to do so while keeping customer costs competitive.
We’ve invested billions to retire and replace aging coal-fired units, installed modern emission controls, integrated significant amounts of renewable energy into our systems and continued to promote energy-efficiency programs for businesses and consumers. And we’ve done it all while keeping customer costs in check. It’s a responsible approach to decarbonization that’s been the hallmark of Xcel Energy’s strategy.
Renewable energy sources –including wind and solar – now account for more than 20 percent of our energy mix. We believe they will become a dominant form of electricity generation in the not-so-distant future – particularly as technology continues to further drive down costs.
At Xcel Energy, we see an energy future that is significantly cleaner than it is today. While environmental regulation is one driving force, consumers and communities want their energy providers to continue to work to reduce emissions and bring more renewable energy sources into their portfolios, and we’re proud to lead the industry in that regard.
