Five Ways Saver’s Switch® is Better than Fido

735230_10151364729843499_1506367521_nLast year my Saver’s Switch article, “I Call Them Peak Day Partners” was well received. From outlining the number of peak days Saver’s Switch may possibly operate and how long it operates during those times to talking comfort and what it means to be a ”˜Peak Day Partner’, a number of questions and concerns were addressed.

Well this year, in the spirit of kicking fresh knowledge (that’s how I roll), I’d like to take a different approach to help highlight the Saver’s Switch program. And although I maintain my view that it is a partnership you make with your community, there are some facts and features I’d like to add to this year.

But I don’t want to bore you with a list. So I decided I would inform and entertain with an absurd, but accurate list.

Five Ways Saver’s Switch is Better than My Dog, Buddy (Buddy is my mutt, who picked me out of a litter 14 years ago.)

1)      Doesn’t Shed. The only thing Saver’s Switch sheds is stress on the power grid during peak demand days in the summer. Buddy sheds hair and has never once offered to sweep.

2)      Requires No Attention. Once the Saver’s Switch is installed it needs no attention. It powers off and on automatically for 15-to-20 minute intervals during peak demand days in the summer. On the other, Buddy has no opposable thumbs, therefore I have to feed the dude daily.

3)      Needs No Love or Affection. Saver’s Switch requires no maintenance on your part. From baths and grooming to petting and walking, Buddy requires constant maintenance of the “love-and-affection” type.

4)      No Waste. Saver’s Switch prevents the unnecessary waste of energy. As far as waste goes, well, with Buddy it’s pretty obvious who holds the bag on this one.

5)      It Pays You. Although I’ve often imagined Buddy would make an enthusiastic Walmart greeter, he can’t. He’s a dog. But Saver’s Switch is different. When you sign up for Saver’s Switch you save 15% on your June through September electric energy charges each year you participate.

I could go on and on, but you get the point. I love Buddy. The dude has the whole “man’s best friend” thing down pat. But as much as I love my handsome hound, I love what Saver’s Switch is all about too. But please, don’t take my word for, explore what it has to offer you. I’d sign up, but for some reason my particular A/C system – a ductless mini-split A/C – doesn’t count for the program. Why is that?

The problem with mini-splits is that we can’t attach a Saver’s Switch to them. If we did figure out how to wire a switch, a secondary problem would be around size. They might be too small (to little load) to justify the cost of deploying the equipment.

Do I need to call each year to activate it?

    • Xcel Energy
      May 23, 2013

Nope. Once it is time to operate it will operate as needed. However, thanks for your inquiry.

If we signed up for this last year, do we need to do anything to get it rolling again this year?

    • Xcel Energy
      May 23, 2013

In one simple word, no. It will resume operation when it’s time. Thanks for checking in, however.

Like Buddy, I am expected to roll over and wag my tail while being taken advantage of. If reducing the demand for energy at peak times is the reason for rewarding super saver customers with a 15% discount how about those of us who do not have an air conditioner to be charged a lower rate? Seems like Buddy would be good with that.

I bet Buddy would like central air conditioning! But kidding aside”¦the system peak we experience on hot summer days is driven by the use of central air conditioning. We approach these customers to help manage this peak because they are the ones with the electric load that could be restrained.

How is this different than a programable thermostat?

    • Xcel Energy
      May 24, 2013

Saver’s Switch is a nice complement to your programmable thermostat. As you may know, with a programmable thermostat you program the temperatures you would like by the time of day (i.e. when I wake up in the morning I want the house at 78 degrees, after I leave for work raise the temperature to 84, etc). The Saver’s Switch kicks in on peak days when the company needs to reduce load on the electric distribution system. At those times, normally about 8-10 times per summer, the switch interrupts the signal from the thermostat to the AC unit. By doing so it reduces the run time of your AC unit during the control event. By doing this for hundreds of thousands of participants it makes a difference to take pressure off our system. During a control event you may see the temperature rise a couple of degrees in your home. But you would also see a 15% discount off the electric energy charges on your summer bills as a thank you for helping.

DOES IT SHOW ON THE BILL? THE REDUCTION IN THE BILL FOR USING THE SAVER SWITCH.

    • Xcel Energy
      May 27, 2013

Yes. If you participate in Saver’s Switch, your June-September bills have a separate line item with the discount.

By your central AC you would have a gray or gray and black box slightly smaller than a shoebox. You also have a disconnect box which is usually a small gray box as well. The Saver’s Switch would say Xcel Energy on it. The disconnect box would not. Or you could send us your address and we’d be happy to check for you!

You must be a residential electric customer to be eligible for the program. Due to your location we cannot sign you up for the program at this time. Thanks for you interest however.

I live in a Townhouse that has an association that has about 180 units. Do I need to install individually or can we install as a Townhouse association. If we can install as a townhouse association, could you please detail how it would work and the energy savings for individual units.

  • Suddy
    May 25, 2013

I also heard that for Associations, there are a number of programs that provide incentives. One specifically that I heard about was that if we install a back-up power, all the units in the association will be eligible for cheaper rates.

Could you please provide me with more details on this program and also on any other incentive programs for townhouse associations. My association has about 180 units.

Can we combine backup power incentive along with savers switch?
