What’s your favorite holiday movie? Whether you grew up watching the seasonal specials, or devotedly view the myriad of movie marathons that take over cable channels this time of year, we can probably all agree that our favorite flicks add to our holiday cheer.
But guess what? Some of the classics can also teach us a thing or two about using the right lighting, especially LED lighting to be both festive and frugal…
According to Box Office Mojo the top 3 grossing holiday movies are How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Polar Express and Elf
A Christmas Story: Who can forget the iconic “leg lamp” that’s a “major award”? If Ralphie’s dad could’ve used an LED bulb, it would have lasted—and annoyed the neighbors—through the movie’s 20th anniversary.
- Lesson: There are LED lighting options to fit any fixture in your house. A-type bulbs are extremely versatile and can be used in most fixtures around the house, like table lamps and sconces. To find a bulb that will add a warm glow to your living room, look for an LED that’s low in lumens (450 lumens equates to a 40-watt bulb).
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation: Clark Griswold’s home lighting display was pretty impressive and expensive using old, traditional light strings!
- Lesson: Before you trim your home for the season, consider decking your halls (and your porch) with more efficient options. You’ll avoid burnout for many seasons to come, and can use the dough you save to offset other holiday activities (like buying more cookie dough?).
Home Alone: Lighting plays a starring role in this high-grossing holiday hit (celebrating its 25th anniversary this year). Even though Kevin’s parents had lights set on a timer for their vacation, it didn’t stop the bumbling, would-be crooks from targeting their home. If the McCallisters could’ve used a few of today’s smart LED lighting, they may have deterred the burglar duo.
- Lesson: Smart LED lighting systems let you flip the switch from a smartphone or tablet, so you can coordinate with school, work or vacation schedules remotely. How cool is that? They cost a little more, but that flexible, long-lasting technology could save you a lot in the long run.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas: The name says it all … the Grinch steals everything, including the holiday lights. At least, initially. But all’s well that ends well, right? I guess it wouldn’t have mattered if the citizens of Who-ville used efficient LED lighting. But by pulling your own seasonal switcheroo you can splurge more on holiday gifts.
- Lesson: Be an energy Grinch. Light up your home with efficiency. Replace your traditional bulbs with LEDs in the lights you use most often to maximize your savings all winter long. They’ll last for decades, and will save you a bundle over the life of each bulb you replace.
Do all these references put you in the mood for a little holiday movie extravaganza? Make it part of your Turkey Day tradition. Grab a plate of leftovers, curl up on the couch and flip on your favorites. Then light up your holidays with a little movie magic … and efficiency. Don’t forget to turn off the lights.
