Situation: Forward-thinking school district maxes out its energy efficiency options

The Stanley-Boyd School District serves just over 1,000 K-12 students in north central Wisconsin. They started their energy efficiency journey in 2010 by doing little things, such as updating heating equipment and better insulating school buildings. They also did a series of improvements to all of the school’s indoor and outdoor lighting. Along this energy savings path, the rebates and incentives helped, and the lower energy use made a monthly impact.

Challenge: Looking for ways to further reduce energy costs

Since 2010, the school district implemented several energy savings plans that reduced their energy costs by more than 25 percent, yet they were looking for additional options to save even more energy. For this school district, energy savings and sustainability became a passion. Because for each dollar saved, it meant another dollar for learning opportunities.

Solution: New locally sourced community solar gardens offers viable green energy option and long-term savings

In early 2016, the introduction of Solar*Connect Communitysm in Wisconsin presented a new and attractive opportunity for the district. Since the project was being run by Xcel Energy it was a partnership that the school board felt had real legitimacy.

Results:

The school district subscribed to 10 kW of solar power, which will be delivered via the Solar*Connect Communitysm program. The solar gardens will be constructed this fall. Once operational, the school district will see $74 monthly bill credit for the 25-year contract. The credit amount may go up but cannot go down. At the very least, the district will be credited $22,075 for a cost of $17,800, about a 20 percent value increase.
